'Tell Me Lies' star Grace Van Patten says that people really believe Jackson White is his character

Grace Van Patten and Jackson White have fans addicted to Hulu's Tell Me Lies, in which they play Lucy and Stephen. "It's crazy that we're doing the show together and have to be those people together," she told PEOPLE. "It's hilarious."

Their characters are absolutely insane together, yet despite the toxicity, they can't help but continue to gravitate towards each other in both the 2008 and 2015 timelines. "God, we're way less exciting than Lucy and Stephen," the actress added. "We're way less dramatic, which I am very thankful for."

She describes their real-life relationship as "very grounded and easy," explaining that they "really understand each other."

"He's such a dedicated, ambitious human that I learn from every day, and he's so extremely supportive," Van Patten said of White. "We're both so supportive of each other. It's respect and support, and that's kind of all you need, really."

The show has been renewed for a third season, which is currently in production. "I had no idea what it was going to be, but it's such a joy to work on. It's with all my best friends now, my boyfriend, like, we're all a family. It doesn't feel like work," she expressed. "In the first season, you don't know what it is or what it's going to be or how people are going to respond to it, but knowing that it's giving people this almost reality TV response, it's fun to know that giving people a big reaction."

"Honestly, it was so fun to go through it with [White] because I think alone, it'd be a lot more overwhelming and maybe more startling or something," she explained. "But because we're together and it's happening to us because we're on this show together, it feels like we're really in it with each other."

It's even "more exciting," she commented, because "we're like, 'Oh my God, this is so fun. We're on this show people love.'"

Still, with how passionately White's character is hated, understandably, that's also a factor. "The intensity of the fans... It's hilarious, because I think they really do believe it's real. Like, they definitely believe Jackson is Stephen, which, poor guy. Poor guy," she concluded

As for how her boyfriend transforms into Stephen, she calls it "still spooky," mentioning, "I still think he's a little too good at it. But it's a testament to him."

A return date for Tell Me Lies has not yet been announced.
