Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is set to take on one of the most serious roles of his acting career, starring in a crime drama produced by legendary director Martin Scorsese. According to Deadline, the film will explore the true story of a ruthless Hawaiian mob boss who fought for control of the island's organized crime scene during the 1960s and ’70s.
Johnson has been known as an action-comedy star. He's become one of the most famous people on the planet for being in films like Moana, Jumanji, Black Adam, and Jungle Cruise. While his movies have done well at the box office (for the most part), they aren't often critically acclaimed. In this film, it's the type of role that could fetch award buzz and he's working with the type of people who have been there and won before.
The Rock is rumored to be portraying the crime lord and will be joined by Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. The film, written by Nick Bilton, is still seeking a studio for financing and distribution, but multiple bids are reportedly in play.
This marks Johnson’s first collaboration with Scorsese, a filmmaker known for classics like Goodfellas and The Departed, and it represents a departure from The Rock’s typical action-hero roles. On the surface, the pair might not seem like an ideal fit, but before The Rock went for blockbuster films, he did have some roles where he tested his acting range. Not only that, but Johnson has expressed interest in making a film set in Hawaii. This will give him the chance to do so.
The film also reunites Johnson and Blunt, who previously worked together on Jungle Cruise. The duo is also starring in the upcoming The Smashing Machine, a biopic about MMA fighter Mark Kerr, directed by Benny Safdie for A24. That, too, is speculated to be a more serious role than The Rock's previous films.
As for how this would affect The Rock's involvement in WWE and shows like WrestleMania 41, it is unlikely this project would have any baring on whatever WWE and The Rock have planned.
