Leave it to Disney to reinvent magical tales—or even how magic itself is perceived—in a matter of 90 seconds.
Thursday morning (July 8), Walt Disney Animation Studio revealed the first teaser trailer for Encanto, due Nov. 24:
The movie's official descriptor reads as follows: "Encanto is the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The all-new original film features the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family."
In the teaser, we're introduced to the exceptionally and supernaturally gifted Madrigals: strength that can lift a piano and the ability to communicate with animals, for example. Mirabel, however, was born with none of those.
The darling Disney animation was directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Charise Castro Smith. Bush and Howard also co-directed and co-wrote Zootopia, which claimed an Oscar for best animated feature film of the year in 2017. Bush and Smith co-wrote the Encanto screenplay, with original music penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
"It's been so exciting because with Moana it was the joy of my life but I was the last guy hired," Miranda previously told Entertainment Weekly of his involvement with Encanto. "And with this, I've been in on the ground floor. To be in on the development of an original Disney musical is such a thrill."
Miranda most recently welcomed In The Heights to the big screen (and HBO Max) last month.
The Hamilton icon's Disney contributions won't end with Encanto, as he composed music for the forthcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey, Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, and more. Miranda is additionally credited as a producer on the Rob Marshall-directed project.
