Before signing on to be one of the leads for the upcoming spin-off of The Office, Domhnall Gleeson received some advice and support from two of the original show's cast members: John Krasinski and Steve Carell.
"He was wonderful. I mean, his big advice that he gave me was to do it," the actor told PEOPLE, referring to his Fountain of Youth co-star. "And the same with Steve Carell, another just wonderful actor who I'd worked with before. And their advice was, if it's Greg Daniels, you should do it because getting to work with him is a treat that not many people get to have."
Gleeson and Carell previously worked together on The Patient. "I'm so happy I did it because I think we have something really lovely. So I'm thrilled with it," he continued to add. "I mean, I like to think I would've got there on my own anyway, but certainly if [John] and Steve had been like, 'Don't do it, it's a nightmare,' I would've hightailed it, but they could not have been more positive about it, and I'm delighted I listened to them."
The Paper will follow the same mockumentary-style format as The Office, but this time it will focus on the staff of The Truth Teller, a historic Midwestern newspaper. "We are three members of a wonderful ensemble cast of underdog characters that are banding together to keep journalism alive," Gleeson said to the audience at NBC's Upfront presentation, joined by Sabrina Impacciatore and Oscar Nuñez. "My character has the unwavering optimistic belief that he can turn The Truth Teller to the glory of its heyday."
Nuñez will reprise his role as Oscar Martinez. The rest of the cast includes Chelsea Frie, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key with Eric Rahill, Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim, and Tracy Letts as guest stars.
NBC has shared that The Paper is set to premiere in September on Peacock.
