When "Barbie" became the sensation of 2023, you just knew that more movie toy I.P. was going to be coming to the big screen. Mattel, owners of Barbie, has thrown the doors wide open and said, "Grab anything you want for adaptation!" Barney, Polly Pocket, Rock 'em Sock'em Robot, and, somehow, Uno are all in the mix. So is Hot Wheels, and the Hot Wheels movie now has a director. One you might call overqualified: Jon M. Chu.
Chu's the director behind both parts of "Wicked," and if "Wicked: For Good" hits with the Oscars as expected, he might go into directing a Hot Wheels movie with a nomination for Best Director to his name. Before we get to the assessment of the pairing, let's get the puffed-up press statements out of the way that feels remarkably silly when you're talking about a Hot Wheels movie.
Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Studios, had this to say about Chu:
Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life. His films are visual spectacles — true eye candy — but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames.
Meanwhile, Chu channeled Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande by delivering an Oscar-worthy performance of being excited about directing a Hot Wheels movie for the storytelling.
Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed — it’s about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play. Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to […] create an adventure that honors Hot Wheels’ legacy while driving it somewhere entirely new.
Jon M. Chu has always believed Hot Wheels is about connection and he's surely not just saying that because he is going to be paid a ton of money to direct this movie.
Now, we will grant you that Greta Gerwig, no slouch as a director in terms of critical cache, helmed "Barbie," and she was able to elevate it beyond mere I.P. cash-in. However, Barbie is a character. Barbie also has a cultural legacy. Hot Wheels are toy cars. There are no Hot Wheels characters. This is going to be an action film, but all it really has at a base level is "cars that go fast."
Can Chu direct a good action movie that has Hot Wheels branding? Sure. Will it be a hit? Probably. Chu is also producing an animated Play-Doh movie, though, so maybe he just loves children's toys. Or money. Probably money.
