After a long-awaited reunion and countless disagreements in the negotiation process, the Mets made a splash on Wednesday night, signing big-time slugger Pete Alonso to a 2-year, $54 million deal, per Jeff Passan.
The deal includes $30 million for the first year and a $24 million player option for year two.
This is great news for the Mets as they promised newly acquired Met Juan Soto protection behind him in the lineup.
Alonso does that and more after posting a .240 batting average and slugging for 34 home runs and 88 RBIs this past season.
In one of Alonso’s worst years in the majors he still managed to be an above average hitter posting a OPS+ of 123, making him 23 percent better than league average.
Following the news, longtime Mets fans and current Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell posted his reaction.
"WHAT A NIGHT," Mitchell posted.
