Knicks and Yankees Make Embarrassing History on Saturday

The NBA’s New York Knicks and MLB’s New York Yankees were both on the losing end of their games on Saturday.

The Knicks played the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Their starters played well in the first half and only trailed by four at halftime, but in the second half, Jalen Brunson and Karl Anthony-Towns were unable to stop Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam. Siakam took home the Larry Bird Eastern Conference finals MVP award.

Brunson, 28, scored 19 points but also had five turnovers. Towns, 29, had a 22-point and 14-rebound double-double but also gave up two turnovers.

Indiana defeated New York 125-108 to win its first Eastern Conference finals since 1999-2000. It will play the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals starting on Thursday.

Meanwhile, it didn’t get much better for the Yankees. New York played the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second day straight on the road and were easily defeated 18-2. Aaron Judge’s two home runs were not enough to overcome Max Muncy, who also smashed two home runs.

Yankees starting pitcher Will Warren didn’t even make it through the second inning because he surrendered six hits and seven earned runs. Meanwhile, Landon Knack went six innings for Los Angeles and struck out six.

Due to both losses, “NYC is the first metro area ever to have an MLB team (Yankees) and an NBA team (Knicks) each lose by 15 or more on the same day,” according to OptaStats.

The jarring statistics should serve as a wake-up call for both teams. The Knicks are heading into a very important offseason, during which they are expected to make key coaching and starting lineup changes that could help them play for a championship next season.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are still at the top of the American League East but will hope to bounce back from the loss by winning the third and final game of the 2024 World Series rematch on Sunday.
