West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez knows how to utilize small, shifty running backs. He added one on Tuesday when Bryian Duncan Jr. (Cairo, GA) flipped from his Kentucky commitment after taking an official visit to Morgantown.
Ever since West Virginia offered Duncan in mid-February, they were held in high regard. However, the 5-foot-9, 160-pound running back pulled a surprise when he then committed to Kentucky in late March. Despite his commitment, he continued to communicate with the Mountaineers.
A visit to campus over the weekend was more than enough for Duncan to make the flip official.
While this is a loss for Kentucky, and the first lost flip by new head coach Will Stein, the Wildcats will be ok. They still have 18 commitments and have a consensus top 20 class in the country. They also have two other running backs committed; three-star Kelsey Gerald (Boynton Beach, FL) and Mason Ball (Jacksonville, AR).
This is one of the odd recruiting situations that very well could turn out to be a win for everyone involved. Duncan will be in a better situation to earn early playing time, West Virginia and coach Rodriguez add another offensive playmaker, and Kentucky has an additional recruiting spot available that they will very likely fill during the next few weeks at a position that needs more depth.
