Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United’s young midfielder, is facing questions after being left out of the squad for both of the club’s opening matches this season.

After being overlooked for two straight games to start the season, Mainoo has reportedly indicated he’s open to hearing offers about his future.

It’s unlikely that Mainoo will move before the transfer window closes, but with so much uncertainty swirling around him right now, United fans can’t feel entirely confident.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe comments on Mainoo’s situation

Earlier in 2025, Sir Jim Ratcliffe addressed questions about Kobbie Mainoo during an interview that also mentioned Alejandro Garnacho.

The conversation came up because of reports suggesting both players could be moved to help balance the club’s finances.

According to The Standard, Ratcliffe responded: “No no. We won’t be selling players because of the state we are in financially. The club had got bloated so we reduced that and will finish it with a lean and efficient organisation.

“That’s how we will address the costs. The player decisions will all be focused on how we are going to improve performance. That’s all.”

While financial pressure may not be driving any decisions, there was no clear statement from Ratcliffe confirming Mainoo would stay regardless of form or fit.

Mainoo hasn’t had any reported issues with Amorim, but the manager has been clear that he hasn’t seen enough yet to make him a regular starter.

If Amorim decides that moving on from Mainoo is best for the team, Ratcliffe is unlikely to stand in his way.

Kobbie Mainoo’s contract situation

Mainoo is expected to feature when United take on Grimsby in the Carabao Cup, which could be his opportunity to work his way back into the Premier League side ahead of the weekend match against Burnley.

But there’s still some uncertainty around his future, with contract talks reportedly stalled. Manchester United had hoped to secure a long-term extension for Mainoo in 2024, but progress has been slow.

His current deal runs until 2027, with an option for another year. While there’s no immediate risk of losing him, seeing Amad recently extend his contract until 2030 highlights why it would be wise to get Mainoo tied down as well.
