Sooners have a prime opportunity to show in-state recruit why he made a mistake committing elsewhere when OU really wants him

Earlier in the offseason, the Oklahoma Sooners didn't get three-star offensive lineman Daniel McMorris to commit to them. Sure, it's a three-star, so it's not a huge deal, but he is from Norman, Oklahoma, right where the Sooners play. So, it was initially thought to be a shoe-in for the Sooners, but that was a long time ago, as so much has happened since then.

McMorris ended up committing to the Minnesota Golden Gophers , which was a bit of a surprise. That's the type of recruiting battle that the Sooners kind of have to win – OU has to land the in-town guys. But McMorris may have realized he made a mistake, as he decommitted recently. And, he scheduled a visit with the Sooners for this week when they play the Michigan Wolverines.

Now, Oklahoma has the perfect opportunity to show him that he made a mistake.

Sooners can show Daniel McMorris why he should have committed from the get-go

According to Collin Kennedy of 247 Sports, McMorris is set to visit with the Sooners this weekend when they play Michigan, and right after that, he will visit with the Texas Tech Red Raiders the next weekend. So, the newly available OL seems like he certainly has two schools on his mind. With him decommitting from Minnesota, the Sooners and other teams now have more of a chance to land him.

The Gophers were the first team to offer McMorris, according to 247 Sports' database and timeline. Then, after a visit with the Gophers on May 30, 2025, McMorris committed to the Gophers the next day.

In their 2026 class, the Sooners only have two offensive linemen right now. They have four-star interior offensive lineman Deacon Schmitt and three-star IOL Noah Best. Adding another guy to the class would be huge for the Sooners. But, with both of those guys being IOL, and McMorris also likely being that at the next level due to his 6'5" frame, he may decide to go elsewhere. Then you add in the competition with guys like Ryan Fodje, who is an impressive true freshman on the roster right now, and there are certainly a few reasons why he would pick another school. Not to mention, Texas Tech has a ton of money to play with.

But the Sooners do need another offensive lineman to round out the class. Maybe his visit this weekend ends up being a huge one, and the Sooners land him regardless. Only time will tell what will happen.
