One of Texas Tech’s most visible traditions faced a rare and unsettling moment Thursday evening when the Masked Rider was involved in a riding incident during a campus event.

The university confirmed that the student rider, Rose Rosas, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. She is expected to make a full recovery and remains in good spirits. Centennial Champion, the horse that carries the Masked Rider each game day, was secured without injury.

The Masked Rider program is one of the most recognizable traditions in college football, serving as the mounted lead-out for Texas Tech football since 1954. Rosas, the 64th rider to hold the position, earned the role this spring through a competitive selection process overseen by the university’s Spirit Program and the Center for Campus Life.

The incident occurred during a scheduled appearance on campus ahead of the fall semester. While the exact cause has not been detailed, university officials emphasized that safety protocols were followed immediately and that Centennial Champion was returned to his handlers without incident.

Accidents involving the Masked Rider are extremely rare, though not without precedent. In 1994, a tragic incident during a pregame run led to the death of the horse, which prompted the university to reexamine and reinforce its safety procedures. Thursday’s incident was far less severe, but it served as a reminder of the risks involved with live mascots and high-visibility campus traditions.

Texas Tech officials, including members of the athletic department and Spirit Program, expressed gratitude for the quick response from event staff and first responders. As Rosas recovers, the program is expected to continue preparing for the upcoming football season with her return in mind.
