The WNBA is in the midst of a league expansion where they plan to add up to 18 franchises by 2030.

The league announced in June that it will be welcoming three new franchises in Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030). Furthermore, by next season, two teams will be added to its existing 13 teams, which include the newly formed Golden State Valkyries.

The league wants to put franchises in Toronto and Portland to add up to 15 teams, and on Tuesday, they welcomed one of them back to the league.

“Welcome the Portland Fire,” the WNBA wrote on its X account. “Tip-off in 2026.”

The Fire were a WNBA franchise from 2000-02 but terminated operations because of failed ownership efforts and Portland Trailblazers owner Paul Allen opting out of buying the organization and no new buyer stepped up.

But following the team's return they used their logotype to draw inspiration from the 12 bridges that connect the city from East to West, according to an ESPN report. The article noted one logo features a red P and a silhouette of the highest point in Oregon, Mount Hood.

The secondary logo is a rose on fire with a black background to pay homage to Portland’s famous flower and the team’s name.

"As a city that has long championed women's sports, Portland is ready to reclaim its place in the WNBA and reignite its connection to the game on the world stage," Portland's interim president, Clare Hamill, said in a statement.

"We are thrilled to complete the journey of bringing professional women's basketball back to the Rose City while honoring the legacy of the original franchise to blaze a new, bold path forward.”

The Fire will return to the WNBA next season alongside the Toronto Tempo, but they need to hire a coach and general manager first.
