Ben Griffin is one of several American rookies set to make their Ryder Cup debut this month, and he isn’t lacking in self-belief heading into the event.
Griffin joins the likes of Russell Henley and Cameron Young as part of a US side hoping to bounce back from their heavy defeat in 2023. The matches will be played at Bethpage Black this time around, offering a fresh start for both teams.
Confidence has never been an issue for Griffin, who has often spoken about his belief in his own abilities. Long term, he sees himself as someone who can compete for majors.
Griffin was speaking at the Procore Championship and spoke about some advice that had come his way from Brad Faxon and Raymond Floyd.
After his opening round in Napa, CA, Griffin was asked about what he expects as one of the new faces at this year’s event.
He pointed out that some advice from Raymond Floyd had already made an impact on him.
“It’s probably going to be loud is what people are saying. There’s going to be some fans,” Griffin said with a smile.
“Advice? I talked to a few guys last week at Old Palm in Jupiter. Talked to Raymond Floyd and Brad Faxon, a couple guys that have played in some Ryder Cups. Raymond played in a bunch and was a captain as well.
Griffin went on to say how some players saw the Ryder Cup as more than just a team event, but also something that shaped their future careers.
“He said a lot of the guys on all his teams hadn’t won majors and ended up winning majors after the Ryder Cup, so gives me some hope, maybe next year at Augusta.”
Ben Griffin has never lacked confidence, and he knows his own game inside out. Earlier this year, Griffin made it clear he’d be comfortable partnering with anyone on the team, including Bryson DeChambeau.
“I think I would pair up well with most of the guys. I would say I’m pretty friendly with everyone,” Griffin told CBS.
“DeChambeau would be really fun. Try to hit a bunch of bombs out there with him. I still feel like I need to get a bit more speed to get to hang with him.”
The decision ultimately rests with Keegan Bradley, but there’s a growing sense of optimism around this US squad that wasn’t there earlier in the year.
