Golf best bets: 1 long shot and 1 lonnnnnng shot to target at the Travelers Championship

Coming off a solid U.S. Open in which we nailed Aaron Rai to finish top 40 (+110) and top 20 (+400), we're on the hunt for another winning week of long shots for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. Here are the two high-priced players we're targeting with outright and finishing position bets this week.

J.T. Poston (+9000 FanDuel)

You don't want to back Poston on massive, modern golf courses due to his lack of distance off the tee, but this is one of the rare weeks that sets up well for him. TPC River Highlands measures just over 6,800 yards, giving players like Poston a chance to compete.

Driving accuracy, wedge play and putting are the key skills to look at this week. Well, Poston ranks ninth on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy and 22nd in birdie or better percentage from 125-150 yards. Plus, he's one of the best putters on Tour. The American has gained strokes from putting in 20 of his last 25 starts. Most of Poston's best finishes this year came on short, point-and-shoot courses like TPC River Highlands, and he finished runner-up here two years ago.

Top-10 finish: +550; Top-20 finish: +200

Michael Thorbjornsen (+40000 FD)

This will likely be the longest long shot we give out this season, but Thorbjornsen won't be priced like this for long.

If you're unfamiliar with the name, Thorbjornsen grabbed a PGA Tour card for the rest of the season by finishing No. 1 in PGA Tour University, becoming just the second player to accomplish that feat. The other? Ludvig Aberg, who's quickly become a star since leaving Texas Tech to turn pro.

Thorbjornsen has a similar skill set to Aberg that starts with his ability to drive the ball long and straight. Whereas Poston will wedge his way around TPC River Highlands, Thorbjornsen will bomb-and-gauge his way to birdie looks. That's exactly what he did in 2022 when he finished solo fourth in his Travelers Championship debut. The Stanford product is loaded with talent, and he's finally ready to prove he belongs on the big stage.

Top-20 finish: +500; Top-30 finish: +165
