Inside Rory McIlroy’s Divorce Drama: Cheating Rumors, Leaked Texts & Secret Weekend Revealed

After becoming the sixth golfer in history to complete the Grand Slam in 2025, Rory McIlroy will return to Augusta National to defend his championship. He defeated his demons and conquered the Masters last year. However, it seems that he will have more issues to overcome this year.

McIlroy’s marriage struggles are in the public domain ahead of this year’s The Masters. Alan Shipnuchk’s book, “Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar,” revealed details of the player’s marriage struggles, including the time he nearly divorced his wife, Erica Stoll, in May 2024.

A month later, amid rumors of an extramarital relationship with golf reporter Amanda Balionis, McIlroy and his wife announced they would stay together.

They met at the 2012 Ryder Cup, when Stoll worked at the PGA of America. McIlroy got engaged to Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki on New Year’s Eve 2013. They broke up before the wedding. McIlroy and Stoll started dating a few months later.

Shipnuck drew parallels between McIlroy and Tiger Woods. The latter’s multiple affairs were exposed in 2009 after he crashed his car outside his home during Thanksgiving weekend.

“It didn’t help that Erica had become a neo-Elin Woods, never doing any interviews and remaining unknown to the golf public,” Shipnuck wrote.

The author noted that McIlroy played smart when the family decided to stay together after he filed for divorce. McIlroy previously said the marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

The short-lived divorce proceedings and hasty reconciliation said more about him than her.

“If you are an internationally famous athlete heading toward becoming a billionaire, it is probably unwise to file for divorce unless you are one million percent certain there is zero chance to save the marriage.

“But McIlroy’s life has been defined by impetuousness, on the golf course and in matters of business and romance.”

After nearly 10 years of marriage, dealing with completely different personalities, McIlroy and his wife will likely be together at this year’s Masters.
