LIV Golf going all-in with tournament TV coverage, why can't PGA Tour?

For as long as the PGA Tour has been broadcast on television, golf fans have grumbled about dissatisfying television coverage. Too many commercials, not enough golf shots and minimal coverage of the entire field have held the coverage back from its immense potential, but maybe all the PGA Tour needs is a little competition to step up its game.

According to Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal, LIV Golf is set to announce a new partnership with Google that will allow fans to watch every shot from every player in the field. The new feature — called "Any Shot, Any Time" — will allow fans to watch every shot throughout the tournament live or on replay on the LIV Golf Plus app. "Any Shot, Any Time" will roll out in full this summer.

Obviously, it's easier for LIV Golf to embrace this strategy because the league features only 54 players and three days of play. PGA Tour fields, meanwhile, are normally 156 players deep. It would be more challenging and much more expensive for the PGA Tour to cut down on commercials and show every shot from every player in the field.

But anything would be better than the current product.

Fans are tired of turning on the Golf Channel during a tournament and being disappointed that three talking heads are breaking down the leaderboard from a studio. They're tired of watching Rory McIlroy pipe a drive 330 down the middle, just for CBS to cut to a post-round interview and immediately go to commercial for two more minutes.

The Masters and The Players Championship have figured how to show every shot. Why can't other tournaments come close to doing the same? In some cases, fans can't even follow players shot-by-shot because ShotLink isn't available at every golf course.

But don't take it from us. Take it from world No. 12 Collin Morikawa, who's an avid golf fan on his off days.

"We need to make golf more intriguing to the viewers," Morikawa told reporters ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, per Golf Digest. "How do we make broadcasting more approachable, how do we see more golf shots at the end of the day, right?

"I turn on golf on a Thursday if I play early. I turn it on and I see three golf shots and I question why. The reason people pay attention is because people see more, you can probably bet more. People like betting when you can watch it live, not watch it on ShotTracer."

The PGA Tour isn't reaching as many fans as it could because of its frustrating television coverage. It may need to take a page out of LIV Golf's book to win them back.
