The 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club is living up to its brutal reputation. Known for lightning-fast greens, punishing rough, and deep bunkers, the course has already claimed several big names. After two rounds, only three players are under par, and the cut line, set at a staggering 7-over, has split the field dramatically. As the PGA TOUR posted on X, a long list of stars won’t be sticking around for the weekend.

Oakmont has truly played the villain. Justin Thomas, who’s had a solid year overall, summed up badly about the course. He missed the cut at 12-over (76-76), calling the course “tough.”

Defending champ Bryson DeChambeau also had a nightmare Friday, carding a 7-over 77 to finish at 10-over and miss the cut by three strokes. His title defense ends early, despite a gritty effort in round one.

The list of casualties doesn’t stop there. Ludvig Åberg (+8), Wyndham Clark (+8), Patrick Cantlay (+8), Tommy Fleetwood (+9), Akshay Bhatia (+10), Sepp Straka (+11), Justin Rose (+14), and Shane Lowry (+17) all missed the cut, as confirmed by the U.S. Open's social media announcement. Even players like Min Woo Lee and Gary Woodland couldn’t find their rhythm.

As it stands, Sam Burns leads at 3-under, followed by J.J. Spaun at 2-under and Viktor Hovland at 1-under. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is hanging in there at 4-over after a rollercoaster 71.

“At the U.S. Open, I don't think you're ever out of the tournament,” he admitted.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy barely survived. After a rocky start and some visible frustration, he birdied 18 to finish at 6-over just enough to squeeze into the weekend.
