After this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, the PGA Tour’s next stop will be at Muirfield Village for The Memorial Tournament.
The Memorial Tournament will kick off arguably the most exciting two-month stretch of golf on the calendar, with The U.S Open, The Open Championship and the FedEx Cup playoffs all to come between now and August.
Scottie Scheffler will be looking for a three-peat at The Memorial next week after his victories at Muirfield Village in 2024 and 2025.
The confirmed field is stacked at ‘Jack’s Place’ next week, with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth have all committed to play The Memorial.
However, one big-name PGA Tour player who was down to play at Muirfield Village has unfortunately been forced to withdraw.
What a strange season it has been for Viktor Hovland so far in 2026.
The 28-year-old from Norway’s game has regressed badly since he won the FedEx Cup in 2023.
And there have been no signs of improvement this season either, with two missed cuts and just one top-10 finish to his name in 11 starts.
The seven-time PGA Tour winner has struggled with his driving and putting in 2026.
And now he has a big concern on his hands with just three weeks remaining until the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
The Memorial Tournament’s official X account broke the news on Friday evening that Hovland has withdrawn from the tournament next week for unspecified reasons.
What a huge shame that is for Hovland. Let’s hope that his withdrawal from The Memorial isn’t due to anything too serious.
Perhaps the Norwegian needs a bit of time off to rest and recuperate.
He has earned scant rewards for all of his hard work behind the scenes this season.
But maybe that is the problem. Is Hovland working too hard on his swing and overcomplicating matters?
The seven-time PGA Tour winner has all the talent in the world, but his mind has caused him all sorts of issues over the past two years.
Maybe, just maybe, Viktor Hovland missing The Memorial Tournament might be a blessing in disguise.
