Charlie Woods is back in the spotlight again after getting off to a slow start at the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Charlie, son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, stepped onto one of the most iconic junior golf stages with high expectations from fans and the media. At just 15, he is already competing against some of the best young golfers in the world, and every swing he makes attracts attention.
Charlie Woods has another chance to prove his mental strength after a rough start at the Junior Players Championship. The 15-year-old, son of golf legend Tiger Woods, is competing in one of the top junior tournaments at TPC Sawgrass, but his opening round left him with work to do.
Woods ended Friday’s round eight shots off the lead after shooting a four-over 76, placing him in a tie for 38th. His day started to improve with two birdies and a bogey over eight holes, but a late bogey at the tough 18th hole left him chasing the leaders, Miles Russell and Nicholas Logis. But on the back nine, he settled down, finding fairways and putting with more confidence. That small recovery kept him in the tournament.
Last year’s youngest winner of the 54-hole event, Russell shot a four-under 68 with seven birdies and three bogeys to share the lead with Logis. Still, Charlie’s name won’t go unnoticed. Even when behind, he has shown the ability to fight back and win, as he did earlier this year at the Team TaylorMade Invitational.
Woods earned the biggest win of his young career despite a shaky start last May. He fired a brilliant six-under 66 in the final round to finish 15-under overall on the Black Course at Streamsong Resort in Florida. That gave him a three-shot victory over Phillip Dunham, Willie Gordon, and Luke Colton.
The 15-year-old earned a breakthrough moment on the AJGA circuit after rounds of 70 and 65 that had him tied for the lead with fellow rising star Miles Russell heading into the final day. It was also a sign of how far he has come since his AJGA debut just a year earlier, when he finished 21-over and tied for 32nd at the Will Lowery Junior Championship.
Woods has been gaining attention for his steady rise in the junior ranks, as well as for moments alongside his father since then. Last December, he wowed fans at the PNC Championship, where he even made a hole-out eagle in the final round before he and Tiger finished second.
The son of the legendary golfer now faces another test at the TPC Sawgrass. He has a big gap to close with one round left but if his past comebacks are anything to go by, counting him out would be a mistake. The next two days will show if the teenager can turn a slow start into another strong finish- something his last year has proven he’s more than capable of doing.
