Tyrrell Hatton has revealed how he celebrated making Europe’s Ryder Cup team. The 33-year-old’s media conference at Wentworth during the PGA Championship took an incredible twist after he was asked how delighted he had been to make the Ryder Cup without the need for a captain’s pick.

Hatton Admits He Had A Messy Night After Celebrations

Hatton explained that he had been uncertain of his place for weeks, especially after joining LIV Golf, where Ryder Cup points are harder to collect. He said he thought his chance might have slipped away after a poor finish at The Open. As a member of the Saudi-backed LIV Tour, Hatton had fewer chances to collect Ryder Cup points and believed he had lost his chance to qualify for a fourth time after shooting a one-over final round at The Open that pushed him out of the top 10.

However, the 33-year-old was fortunate that no other player did enough to overtake him, and he held on to one of the six automatic spots in Luke Donald’s European team. Then came the call from captain Luke Donald confirming that he had done enough to qualify automatically.

“God, it was aggressive. It was horrible. But I mean, it was funny at the time,” said Hatton, who consumed drinks alongside his LIV Golf and European teammate Jon Rahm. He laughed as he described how the evening spiralled. By the time he returned to his hotel room, he was exhausted and drunk.

“Jon had just won the LIV Golf individual title, so we had a bit of a tear-up. Yeah, that was a messy night. When I actually got back into the room, I fell across the bed sideways and face down in that position, and then I woke myself up throwing up in that position. I fell back asleep in that position and then as I woke up I had sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt. I look in the mirror and I’ve sick on my face, in my bed.”

Hatton Doesn’t Want To Get In “Horrible” State Again

The golfer admitted that the morning after was grim. He still had a flight to catch and had to check out of the hotel in a state of embarrassment. Before leaving, he tried to clean up what he could. Hatton said the experience left him determined not to repeat the same mistake.

“How I set an alarm to make a flight in a few hours’ time, I don’t know. I don’t ever want to get to that state again to be honest. Waking up in a slightly more sober state was horrendous, having to clean up that. I ended up stripping the bed, leaving some cash and a note, saying ‘Really sorry, I was sick in the bed in the night, please throw it in the trash,” Hatton said in an interview with Golf Channel.

Hatton’s messy celebration highlights just how much Ryder Cup qualification means to him. Now, he’ll aim to turn that passion into performance for Team Europe.
