Rory McIlroy let his emotions get the better of him at the U.S. Open on Friday after a rough stretch at Oakmont Country Club. The four-time major winner was caught on camera throwing his club in frustration after a poor tee shot on the par-5 12th hole.

McIlroy needed a strong second round to stay in contention after opening with a 4-over-par 74 on Thursday. However, things didn’t go well and he double-bogeyed two of his first three holes on Friday and looked uncomfortable from the start. The Northern Irishman is now in danger of missing the cut and unless he finds his rhythm quickly, his U.S. Open hopes could end early.
Only the top 60 players and ties will make the cut at Oakmont, which is currently at +6. The 36-year-old sits at +8 after an uninspiring performance on Friday. However, McIlroy isn’t the only big name struggling at Oakmont. The likes of Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Justin Rose, Bryson DeChambeau, Shane Lowry, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay, and Patrick Reed are all in danger of missing the cut.
McIlroy won the Masters in April to complete his career Grand Slam but has struggled for consistency since then, missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open after shooting a dismal second-round 78. McIlroy’s game has been off, and his frustration is now spilling out onto the course, as he launched his club into the rough following a poor tee shot.
McIlroy refuses to speak to media after losing his cool
McIlroy chose not to speak to the media after both rounds, continuing his decision at the PGA Championship where he ignored the media after each of his four rounds. The 36-year-old also decided not to accept the USGA’s request to make a few statements on his round. This has led to some criticism from some quarters, especially at a major championship where top players are expected to face the press—win or lose.
The Northern Irishman put in a disappointing performance at the PGA Championship, tying for 47th. It appeared he would finally regain some momentum when the USGA paired him with Shane Lowry, his good friend and fellow Irishman. The familiar pairing appeared to help at first, as McIlroy started strong, shooting a 2-under 33 on his opening nine, which began on the back nine at Oakmont. But things fell apart for him after the turn. He lost momentum and carded a 6-over 41 on his closing nine, with bogeys on holes 1, 3, 6, and 7, and a costly double bogey on the 8th—his second-to-last hole of the day.

Daniel Berger withdrew from the BMW Championship prior to the start of Sunday's final round due to an injury. Berger, 32, appeared to have sustained a finger injury while swinging his club during the third round of the tournament in Owings Mills, Md. He was seen icing his finger on the NBC broadcast. Who could be the odd man out in Browns QB room?
The Cleveland Browns entered the preseason with four quarterbacks competing for the starting job, but don't expect all of them to be on the 53-man roster. On Sunday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced he will name a starting QB before the team's final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network. He also indicated they won't keep all of them on the active roster. "I think we'll let it play out as we get closer to the cut down," Stefanski told the media. "Those are all conversations that we are always having, but those are tough decisions. You know, I'd like to keep everybody, but that's not realistic." Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel have been competing for the starting QB job throughout the offseason. Flacco will likely win it. The 40-year-old played for Stefanski in 2023, helping the Browns make the playoffs. That season, he went 4-1 in five starts, winning Comeback Player of the Year. Sanders and Gabriel, meanwhile, have flashed potential in their preseason starts. Sanders — a fifth-round pick out of Colorado — finished 14-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 8. Gabriel —a third-round pick out of Oregon — went 13-of-18 passing for 143 yards and one interception in a 22-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Saturday. With that in mind, Pickett seems like the odd man out. The 27-year-old didn't look like a viable starter in his first three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, tossing 15 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in 30 regular-season games. Teams that need another backup QB (Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys) may be interested in Pickett. This past Tuesday, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer told WKRK-FM in Cleveland he could see a team trade for the former Pittsburgh Panthers star. Regardless, figure on the Browns moving on from Pickett before the start of the regular season in September. He lacks a clear advantage over the other QBs.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt deserves 500 touches” Commanders team reporter Josh Taylor said: “Jacory Croskey-Merritt’s stock isn’t to the moon, it’s to the Marvel multiverse at this point.” It’ll remain to be seen whether the Croskey-Merritt hype is real, but they’re already betting on a seventh-round rookie in Washington D.C.
