11 of the best European spa towns

Europe is known for its historical landmarks, beautiful cities, and amazing food. The continent is less commonly known as a place of relaxation — outside Mediterranean beaches. But European spa towns make the perfect getaway. Here are the top 11 to put on your next itinerary!

Baden-Baden, Germany

A former Roman town, Baden-Baden is known as the Black Forest’s spa capital. In the Middle Ages, thermal bathes began to pop up around the area. After the 30 Years War, the spas started to decline until a resurgence in the early 19th century as a resort destination it maintains today. While some of the old grandeur has been lost, it’s still a beautiful place to relax and recharge for a day or two.

The Swiss city isn’t normally considered a spa destination, but plenty of spas, saunas, and salons are sprinkled throughout town. The must-tries are the Saunaboot (sauna boat) and the Lakeside Sauna, where you can swim in the lake during summer.

Budapest, Hungary

One of Budapest’s nicknames is “City of Baths,” and it surely lives up to that, as a spa day is definitely part of the local culture. The Celtic, Roman, and Ottoman history of the city contributes to the prominence of public bathing culture. Thus, most baths are at least a century old in the city — you’ll be relaxing amongst history!

If you can’t make it to town for a soak, you can purchase skin care, bottled water, and more with Vichy water.

The likes of Peter the Great, Tolstoy, and others have been sneaking away to Karlovy Vary for centuries. For a good reason, as the baths today are housed in ornate hotels that feature 19th-century architecture. Although you don’t need to book a stay to enjoy the waters, you can stop by one of the colonnades around town — open pavilions with fountains that provide access to the healing waters.
