2026 Transactions: Cubs Select Triantos, Pirates DFA Urquidy

The Cubs’ bench shuffle continued on July 24, as the club demoted Kevin Alcantara and promoted infielder James Triantos. Additionally, both the Pirates and Phillies called up catchers from Triple-A.

Cubs promote Triantos

The Cubs called up infielder/outfielder James Triantos from Triple-A Iowa.

Triantos is the near-antithesis of Kevin Alcantara, who was subsequently optioned to Triple-A. He slashed .306/.344/.440 with seven home runs and 32 extra-base hits over 88 contests. High-contact rate hitter who doesn’t walk a lot. He played second, third, and the outfield for the Iowa Cubs.

Pirates make more moves

One day after the Pirates shook up their bullpen, the club designated pitcher Jose Urquidy for assignment.

The Pirates also selected catcher Shawn Ross from Triple-A Indianapolis. A 39% CS% for Ross this season behind the plate. The 26-year-old slashed .181/.325/.432 with 10 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Recalls & options

Josh Walker (Orioles) and Luis Morales (Athletics) were recalled from Triple-A.

Eli Morgan (Royals), Will Dion, and Daniel Schneemann (Guardians) were optioned to the Minors.

Other moves

The Phillies selected catcher Payton Henry from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Milwaukee designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment.

The Rangers signed pitcher Anthony Veneziano to a Minor League deal.
