25 MLB prospects who can still help their teams this season

1 of 25

Braxton Ashcraft, SP, Pirates

Ashcraft was drafted in the second round out of high school in 2018, and has overcome injury to be one of Pittsburgh's most polished prospects. He's walked fewer than two batters per nine innings for the second straight year, and has also shown an ability to miss bats. At age 24, Ashcraft shows the potential to skip Triple-A and help create an elite young rotation alongside Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, and Mitch Keller.

Owen Caissie, OF, Cubs

The Cubs already have a slog of outfielders, and it could become even more crowded with Caissie's pending arrival. He's been great at Triple-A Iowa this season, posting an .867 OPS in 53 games and elite on-base skills. Chicago is in good hands if one of their outfielders gets injured.

Junior Caminero, 3B, Rays

Caminero is arguably baseball's best prospect but has missed significant time this season with multiple leg injuries. Before getting injured this year, Caminero was hitting .261-8-24 in 153 plate appearances at Triple-A Durham. The 20-year-old debuted in MLB last season and should still help the Rays later this summer.

Cade Cavalli, SP, Nationals

Cavalli made one start for the Nats in 2022, but has spent most of his time since then recovering from elbow surgery. He's never had trouble missing bats and is a candidate to help Washington in the second half.

Dylan Crews, OF, Nationals

Crews was selected second overall in last year's draft ahead of Texas rookie Wyatt Langford. Washington took some criticism given Langford's immediate pro performance, but Crews has still held his own at Double-A Harrisburg hitting .273-4-33 with nine steals in his first 41 games. He should be an option for the Nats late in the year.

Jasson Dominguez, OF, Yankees

Dominguez created a buzz in the Bronx with his performance over eight games last season, but was lost to elbow surgery. He's back at Triple-A and hoping for a call-up to help the Yanks sometime soon. The 21-year-old shows star potential when the Yankees have a need in the outfield.

David Festa, SP, Twins

Festa has developed into an excellent prospect despite going in the 13th round out of Seton Hall in 2021. He had a 3.56 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A St. Paul, with an elite 13.6 strikeouts per nine innings. Shaky control could push Festa to the bullpen in the short-term, but he's close to helping.

Richard Fitts, SP, Red Sox

Fitts had the unique opportunity to go from the Yankees to the Red Sox via offseason trade, and could be a member of Boston's rotation soon. The right-hander shows strong control, and has posted a 3.72 ERA in 48.1 innings at Triple-A Worcester.

Jace Jung, 3B, Tigers

The younger brother of Rangers third baseman Josh Jung, Jace was the 12th overall draft choice in 2022 and is having a strong year at Triple-A Toledo, hitting .276-9-37 with a .389 OBP in 53 games. He should help the Tigers down the stretch.

10 of 25

Heston Kjerstad, OF, Orioles

Kjerstad made an impression late last season with two home runs in September, but he couldn't stick around after a brief stint early this season. However, Kjerstad has been arguably the best hitter in the minors this season with 14 home runs and a 1.069 OPS in 42 games at Triple-A. When the O's need a bat, Kjerstad will be ready.

Jackson Holliday, 2B, Orioles

The top overall pick in 2022 out of high school, Holliday had raked everywhere until he reached the majors this season. The Orioles demoted Holliday after he went 2-for-34, but it's certainly not the last the team has seen of him this season. The top prospect has a .910 OPS at Triple-A and should be back to help in the second half.

12 of 25

Cade Horton, SP, Cubs

Horton has seen mixed results this season, dominating Double-A but struggling with his control at Triple-A. Ultimately, the 2022 first-round pick has ace upside when he gets healthy, and should be able to help the Cubs after he irons out his control issues.

13 of 25

Jordan Lawlar, SS, Diamondbacks

Lawlar is returning from a thumb injury that pushed back his debut this season, but it's only a matter of time until he's helping in Arizona. He had a terrific 2023 season between Double- and Triple-A hitting .278-20-67 with 36 steals in only 105 games, and also played 14 games for the Diamondbacks.

Brooks Lee, SS, Twins

It's unclear what position Lee will play in the majors, but the Twins expect their 2022 first-round pick to help this season. He missed much of the first two months due to injury but hit .364 in his first 12 games and has solid power.

15 of 25

Orelvis Martinez, 2B/3B, Blue Jays

Martinez has moved off shortstop with Bo Bichette in front of him, but the bat should play anywhere. He's hit at least 28 home runs in three consecutive seasons and already has 14 home runs in 54 games at Triple-A Buffalo this year. Martinez still has some plate discipline issues to work on but will help a Toronto club needing offensive firepower.

Marcelo Mayer, SS, Red Sox

The fourth overall choice in the 2021 draft, Mayer has rebounded from a disappointing 2023 season to hit well at Double-A Portland. Mayer is hitting .304-6-29 with 11 steals in 51 games and has a path to playing time in Boston following Trevor Story's shoulder injury.

17 of 25

Coby Mayo, 3B, Orioles

Baltimore has a seemingly never-ending stream of hitting talent, with Mayo potentially helping at the hot corner. He hit .291-13-37 through 42 games at Triple-A Norfolk, but with the team's depth, an opportunity could be tough to come by.

18 of 25

Chayce McDermott, SP, Orioles

McDermott can spin the ball and miss bats, as he's shown this season with a dominant 14.2 strikeouts per nine innings at Triple-A Norfolk. The concern is his poor control, which could push McDermott to the bullpen when he arrives in Baltimore. The O's could use help at the backend of games, so his arrival could be convenient.

19 of 25

Joe Rock, SP, Rays

A former second-round pick by the Rockies, Rock has helped his stock since joining the Rays this season with improved control. He posted a 4.67 K/BB ratio and only two walks per nine innings through 53 innings at Durham, and could help Tampa Bay's rotation soon.

20 of 25

Ricky Tiedemann, SP, Blue Jays

Tiedemann has electric stuff, but health continues to be a problem for the lefty. He's nursing an elbow injury after making only three starts at Triple-A earlier this season, but the Jays still hope to see him at some point in 2024.

21 of 25

Drew Thorpe, SP, White Sox

Thorpe was traded twice in the offseason, first to San Diego for Juan Soto and then to the White Sox for Dylan Cease. It's easy to see why teams wanted him with a 1.35 ERA over his first 11 starts at Double-A this season. The changeup artist could make an impact on the majors with his great control.

22 of 25

Zac Veen, OF, Rockies

The speedy Veen saw his stock plummet last season due to injury and poor results, but he's back on track at Double-A Hartford. He hit .326 in 28 games before suffering a back injury, though Veen is on the map in the second half for the Rox.

23 of 25

Hurston Waldrep, SP, Braves

Atlanta's first-round pick in 2023 looks to be on the cusp of the majors already. He was promoted to Triple-A after posting a 2.92 ERA in nine starts at Double-A Mississippi and was called up to make his debut on June 9.

24 of 25

Jacob Wilson, SS, Athletics

Wilson went sixth overall in last year's draft due to his excellent contact-hitting ability, and he's been as advertised for Oakland. Through 28 games played, Wilson has hit .438-3-22 between Double-A and Triple-A with a sub-10% strikeout rate. Wilson could be a great leadoff candidate in the second half of the season.

25 of 25

James Wood, OF, Nationals

James Wood, OF, Nationals

Wood could be the best player acquired in the massive package Washington received for Juan Soto from the Padres in 2022. He's off to an incredible start at Triple-A Rochester, hitting .355-9-31 with 10 steals in 45 games. Wood should be ready whenever the Nationals opt to promote him.

The 2024 MLB season has featured many prospect struggles, but there remain difference makers on the farm for the stretch run. These 25 prospects could still help their teams this season.
