PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks are rumored to be heading to Mexico to meet the San Diego Padres in a regular-season series next year, according to the Athletic’s Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal.
In the last several years, the MLB has hosted “World Tours,” in which select teams travel outside the United States to play a two-game series. These tours help promote international play.
The Diamondbacks and Padres were scheduled to meet in Mexico in 2020, but the series was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With international regular-season games coming back in 2023, the Diamondbacks have an opportunity to play down south in 2026.
Mexico City would host the series, with the games held at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu. The stadium is named after the Mexican billionaire, a minority owner of the Padres.
Although nothing is confirmed by both front offices, with the Diamondbacks having a prelevant Mexican and Mexican-American fanbase, the series would put the team in great shape on an international stage.
