Adding a starter isn’t the Toronto Blue Jays’ biggest priority, but it is a need this off-season.
They’ll undoubtedly be active this off-season, but unlike in past years, the Jays haven’t been linked to a whole lot of soon-to-be free agents, at least not yet. An exception to that is Japanese pitcher Kaima Taira, as Sanspo’s Kentaro Tsukazawa reported that the Jays had scouts to watch the 26-year-old.
It’s expected that his Nippon Professional Baseball team, the Seibu Lions, will post the right-handed pitcher this off-season. Should the Blue Jays be interested? Let’s find out!
The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher has spent his entire career in Japan on the Lions. In eight NPB seasons, he’s posted a 1.78 ERA over 592 innings of work, with a 25.8 K% and a 9.4 BB%.
In 2026, the 5’8” righty finished the year with a 1.36 ERA and 2.28 FIP across 146 innings of work, paired with a 24.8 K% and 7.9 BB%. It was just the second season he spent as a starter, as all 23 of his appearances in 2023 was in the rotation, where he had a 2.40 ERA and 2.69 FIP over 150 innings of work.
In all but two seasons, Taira has finished with an ERA below 2. Since 2020, only two pitches in NPB, Liván Moinelo and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, have pitched 500+ innings with a better ERA than Taira. Moreover, Taira’s ERA led all of NPB among qualified pitchers, though it’s worth noting that the league is in a dead-ball era. In 2025, Taira was one of 21 players with 50 innings of work and an ERA below 2.00.
Taira has proven to be a versatile pitcher, capable of pitching in relief and in a rotation. His best pitch is his fastball, graded at 70 by Fangraphs. That’s because standing at 5’8”, he sits in the mid-90s with the heater and can touch triple digits. On top of the heater, Taira features a changeup, splitter, cutter, slider, and a handful of other pitches according to this MLB.com article written by Michael Clair earlier this month.
There really isn’t a great comparison for Taira, aside from former Blue Jay Marcus Stroman. The righty stands at 5’7” and had a deep repertoire, although his heater didn’t reach nearly the same velocity as Taira’s.
But what about the fit? Well, if the 2026 season taught us anything, it’s that a team can never have too many pitchers. Right now, the 2027 Blue Jays’ projected rotation consists of Dylan Cease, José Soriano, Trey Yesavage, and if healthy, Cody Ponce. Spencer Arrighetti, Spencer Miles, Bowden Francis, José Berríos, and others may factor in as well.
The Blue Jays don’t need to go out and get an ace like they did with Cease during the 2025-26 off-season, but adding a #4 in the rotation wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Taira has a chance to be a solid back-end-of-the-rotation starter for the Blue Jays.
