The Toronto Blue Jays announced Sunday that Max Scherzer will be coming off the injured list on Monday to start that night’s game at the Washington Nationals. The game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.

Scherzer has been less than effective when healthy this season, which he has been for only a small portion of it. He has made just six starts due to forearm, ankle, back and thumb injuries. He has made five total rehab starts in the minors.

In 22 innings pitched, Scherzer is 1-4 with a 10.23 ERA. He has struck out 14, walked 11 and given up an eye-popping nine home runs. The 42-year-old will hope to have more success on his birthday in his first MLB start since June 10.

To make room for him on the active roster, Toronto had to take a player off. They announced Monday that it will be relief pitcher Braydon Fisher.

Fisher is heading to the bereavement list. He was previously placed there on July 6 after the unfortunate passing of his 65-year-old father Normand. There is no more information available yet on this new placement.

MLB’s bereavement list policy is as follows: the player will miss between three and seven games, while continuing to receive their salary and service time. Fisher’s first time on the list lasted from July 6 to July 10.

Fisher turned 26 yesterday and is in his second MLB season, both with the Blue Jays. He has been solid this year, pitching 52 innings and compiling a 4.15 ERA. He has struck out 52 and walked 26 while owning a 46.6% groundball rate.

The club is rapidly approaching a crossroads in their season. They are 48-58, last place in the American League East but only five and half games back of the last Wild Card spot.

With the Aug. 3 trade deadline looming, this next week will determine how they operate when that time comes. It is hard to imagine Fisher would be on the trade block while he deals with this family news.
