Blue Jays selected Nick Mitchell with the 136th overall pick in the 2024 draft

Standing at 5’10”, 185 lb, Mitchell didn’t rank on MLB Pipeline’s Top 250 draft prospect list.  He played for Western Illinois University in his first two collegiate seasons, slashing .354/.464/.568 with four home runs in his final season at that University.

He transferred to Indiana University at Bloomington for the 2024 season, and slashed .335/.458/.512 with five home runs and more walks (40) than strikeouts (36). While his slash line declined a bit, it’s worth noting that Indiana University is a Big Ten school, a much tougher conference than the Summit League. He also stole 45 bases in his collegiate career while being thrown out just 6 times. In 2024, Mitchell was 7/7 in stolen base attempts

His most recent summer league was back in 2023, where he was an All-Star in the wood bat Cape Cod League. For his entire summer league career, he slashed .337/.438/.483 with four homers in 421 plate appearances, along with 51 walks and 39 strikeouts.

Although he doesn’t rank as a top 250 draft prospect, the draft panel did note that he has good bat speed, but hasn’t really used it on the bases. He played mostly in right field for Indiana, but has experience playing in all three outfield positions. Moreover, he’s shown plus plus speed, and his job is to get on base.

The slot value for the 136th overall pick is $515,100, and there’s a good chance that Mitchell will also be an under slot pick. Both Trey Yesavage (their first-round pick) and Johnny King IV (their third-round pick) may receive over slot deals, meaning the Jays will need to save money. Overall, they have $8.897 million in the signing bonus pool available.
