Ex-NFL star Boomer Esiason did not hold back on Juan Soto on Thursday. The former football star blasted the $765 million star of the New York Mets for his attitude in his team’s 4-1 loss against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday.
In the series finale between the Mets and the Guardians, Soto came under the spotlight after he broke the no-hitter bid of Gavin Williams . The Dominican international slammed a solo home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to put his team on board and crush the dream of Williams of throwing a no-hitter.

As Soto’s shot bounced off the top of the wall, he was seen smiling while circling the bases. While his home run avoided the Mets from being on the wrong end of MLB history, Boomer Esiason was not pleased with his attitude.
The former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback did not like him “ loafing” around the bases. As per him, Soto could have been thrown out at first base if it was not a home run.
He’s loafing… he’s got a nice smile on his face, he’s laughing. I’m sick of it. I want to see attitude.

Soto’s home run in this game was the only hit the Mets registered. They ended up losing 4-1 and got swept by the American League Central team in the process.
Juan Soto broke MLB records in December 2024 when he agreed to join the New York Mets on a massive 15-year, $765 million deal. Since then, the spotlight has been on him as he is one of the highest-paid players now. Boomer Esiason wants him to be like the other top stars and set an example for his team while leading them out.
While speaking on him during the WFAN’s Boomer and Gio podcast, the commentator expressed that he (Soto) needs to lead the team out like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani .
Your highest-paid player, whether it be Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani or, in this case, Juan Soto, has to lead the team. They have to set the example. And when the example is being set is now that just doesn’t look, at least to the naked eye, and as a former athlete looks to me like, if that’s the guy getting $765 million and he’s supposed to be our leader, I’m not following that guy.

This is not the first time Soto has been bashed for his efforts during a game. Earlier this year, he was criticized for his lack of ‘hustle’. The 4-time MLB All-Star was slammed by many regarding his slow baserunning towards first base.
The New York Mets have once again suffered a slump in form. The loss on Wednesday saw them get swept by the Cleveland Guardians and drop their 4th successive game. Following the game, Juan Soto commented on the slump of the team.
Before this sweep at the hands of the Guardians, the Mets had been swept by the San Diego Padres. The team has won just 2 of their last 10 games, which has seen their record go from 61-44 to 63-52.
While speaking to the reporters after the game, Soto expressed that his team has to come together while trying to bring home the trophy.
Nobody said it’s going to be easy to go all the way. It’s a challenge. We’ve got to go out there and take it from them. Nobody is going to bring the trophy over here and give it to us, we’ve got to go out there and take it.
Juan Soto told the reporters

Things do not get easy for Soto and his teammates, though, as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers next. The NL Central side have the best record in the league at 70-44 and have a 9-1 record in their last 10 games.
