Braves OF Marcell Ozuna arrested on domestic violence charges

Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested Saturday and charged with felony assault after he allegedly choked his wife and threw her against a wall, Sandy Springs, Georgia, police said, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

At 12:26 p.m., Sandy Springs police responded to a 911 call and entered Ozuna's home after hearing screams inside, according to the department's account of the incident. Officers witnessed the entire incident.

Police said Ozuna's wife had visible injuries but was not transported to the hospital.

The two-time All-Star was charged with aggravated assault by strangulation, which carries a minimum of three years in prison, and misdemeanor battery.

According to Passan, Major League Baseball will launch an investigation into the incident and Ozuna could be hit with a significant suspension. The Braves could also attempt to convert the 30-year-old's four-year, $65 million contract to non-guaranteed.

The Braves released a statement saying they are aware of the incident and will have no further comment until the investigation is completed.

Ozuna's arrest comes nearly one year after his wife was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery.

The nine-year veteran re-signed with the Braves after putting together one of his best seasons in 2020. He finished sixth in MVP voting last season and won his second Silver Slugger award.

In addition to playing for the Braves, Ozuna has also spent time with the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals.

According to Passan, MLB will likely place Ozuna on the restricted list, which would prevent him from being paid.
