Each year, the MLB Draft brings a mixture of collegiate and high school players into the professional ranks from across North America (the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico). It's common to see college programs have multiple players selected in the draft, especially for the bigger schools that are routinely among the NCAA's best.
The Tennessee Volunteers, for instance, had eight players selected just in the first three rounds of the draft on Sunday.
Seeing multiple players drafted from the same high school is a far rarer feat. Just twice in the draft's history prior to Sunday had the same school produced three players in the first 100 selections of the draft:
Corona HS in California has now topped them both. The school, located in Riverside County in Southern California, made draft history on Sunday with three selections in the first 50 picks of the draft.
Right-hander Seth Hernandez got things started, getting selected with the sixth-overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates. MLB Pipeline ranked Hernandez as the No. 3 prospect in the draft class. The 19-year-old was widely considered the best high school arm in this year's class, with some scouts believing he could develop into a future ace.
Shortstop Billy Carlson was selected four picks later at No. 10 by the Chicago White Sox, making them the first pair of high school teammates to both be selected in the first 10 picks of the draft. Carlson is considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the entire draft class. MLB Pipeline had him ranked as the No. 7 player in the class.
Third baseman Brady Ebel rounded out the group, getting selected at No. 32 by the Milwaukee Brewers. The power-hitting 17-year-old's father, Dino, is the longtime third base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ebel was ranked No. 64 by MLB Pipeline.
A fourth player from Corona, right-hander Ethin Bingaman, ranked No. 150 entering the draft, but he was not selected in the first three rounds.
