The New York Yankees have lost five straight games. Having led the American League East standings earlier this season, not only has New York fallen to third in the division, but its hold on a Wild Card spot is also slipping.
Falling to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, the Yankees are now 60-54 on the season. This places them just one loss up on Texas for that final American League Wild Card spot. Making matters additionally frustrating for Yankees fans has been the nature of these losses, many of which have come via a bullpen that was significantly bolstered at the trade deadline.
One of the biggest holes in New York's bullpen this season, especially of late, has been two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams. The right-hander suffered another loss on Tuesday, his fourth of the season, surrendering two runs in the eighth inning.
Over his last four appearances, Williams has given up six earned runs. This has led to many calling for Yankees manager Aaron Boone to utilize other options in the late innings, but Williams has continued to get chances.
After Williams blew another game, this one with massive Wild Card implications, fans immediately began calling for Boone's firing.
"Fire Aaron Boone," Yankees Source wrote on X. "Lets wrap this up already and move on to some intelligent baseball."

Several fans echoed this same sentiment.
"Why would you bring Williams in again?" one asked. "Fire him! FIRE BOONE!!!!!!"
Another exclaimed, "START THE FIRE BOONE CHANTS ON FRIDAY, WE’VE REACH A BOILING POINT AND IT’S TOO MUCH!!!"
"If the Yankees want any chance at salvaging this season, which I believe they still can do, they must fire Boone tonight….. they won’t do it… they don’t care, they should’ve done it after ‘23," said another.
Yankees Pod host Jimmy Randazzo even rallied the fanbase to get behind the idea of firing Boone.
Like and Retweet to fire Aaron Boone.#FireBoone

Following their fifth straight loss, the Yankees are now just a half-game up on Texas for the final AL Wild Card spot and could lose their hold on that with another loss on Wednesday. While this skid has come without AL MVP favorite Aaron Judge in the lineup, the Yankees have been unable to preserve late leads, win close games, or play fundamental baseball the last week.
After this series with Texas, the Yankees will head home for three games with the Astros.
