The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs share one of the strongest and oldest rivalries in the MLB. The two arch-nemeses from the National League Central are currently battling for a three-game set at Busch Stadium. With the series still on the line heading into the decisive clash, fireworks were bound to fly when the Cardinals hosted the Cubs on Sunday evening.
After gaining an early advantage on the scoreboard, the St. Louis Cardinals romped to a 5-1 win at Busch Stadium to clinch the series over their big rivals. Pete Crow-Armstrong produced the only run for the Chicago Cubs with a solo homer to left field in the sixth inning. It soon led to a wild moment between the Cardinals and Cubs fans in the stands.
The ball from the PCA home run landed squarely among the raucous St. Louis fans in the “Tarps Off” section of the left-field bleachers. Video footage from the section shows the Chicago Cubs in front, yelling at them to chuck the ball to them. A young Cardinals supporter finally obliges, but his wild throw hits the back of a middle-aged Cubs fan in the front row.

Cubs fans have a tradition of throwing back the home run balls hit by opponent hitters at Wrigley Field. Perhaps they wanted the Cardinals to do the same here, but it led to a wild moment in the stands instead.
St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol was one of the earliest supporters of the “Tarps Off” movement. Marmol brought the core group of Cardinals fans that started the initiative to meet up with the players in the clubhouse. He feels this will help bring in more fans from the younger generation into the game.
“I love it, man,” Marmol told Rosenthal. “You look at the demographic of our sport. Just being able to get youths into it, interested in it, doing what they’re doing in right field right now. I think it’s good for the game. So I love the fact that they’re out there having a good time, man.”
The Cardinals fans are certainly having a good time this season. Their team is challenging for a postseason berth after a few years of heavy disappointment. At the moment, St. Louis occupies second place in the NL Central with a 31-26 record.
