Clint Hurdle and the Rockies are parting ways, the baseball lifer announced on social media (link via Thomas Harding of MLB.com). Hurdle has been in the organization for the past five seasons, mostly in a special assistant role.
The 69-year-old Hurdle is better known for his first stint with the club. After playing parts of 10 seasons in the big leagues, he went into minor league managing in the late 1980s. Hurdle began coaching in the Colorado farm system in 1994, then worked his way onto the MLB staff as hitting coach. He was promoted to manager in 2002 and led the club for eight seasons, including their trip to the World Series in ’07. The Rockies fired him in May ’09 after a rough start to that season.
Hurdle spent a season as hitting coach in Texas before returning to the managerial ranks. He took the lead job with the Pirates in 2011. Hurdle led the club to three straight playoff appearances from 2013-15 (still the franchise’s only postseason berths since the Barry Bonds era) and won NL Manager of the Year honors in 2013. He managed parts of nine seasons with the Bucs but was fired at the tail end of the ’19 campaign.
After a couple seasons out of baseball, Hurdle returned to Colorado in the special assistant capacity. He moved back onto the coaching staff in 2025, taking over as interim hitting coach and then interim bench coach when the Rox made various changes amidst a 119-loss season. He returned to the special assistant role for the ’26 season, the first year under the new front office team of Paul DePodesta and Josh Byrnes.
Hurdle, who narrowly trails Bud Black for the title of winningest manager in Rockies history, said in his statement that he’s not ending his career. “With my last day being October 31, 2026 … just know that I am not retiring … but rather recalculating my journey personally and professionally,” he wrote as part of a much longer message thanking the organization.
