The Chicago Cubs have advanced to the National League Division Series Round of the 2025 MLB postseason after outlasting the San Diego Padres in three games in the NL Wild Card phase. That series win earned them a ticket to face the Milwaukee Brewers in a best-of-five series that begins this Saturday at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

On the mound for the Cubs in the series opener versus Milwaukee is lefty Matthew Boyd, who just pitched in last Tuesday’s 3-1 win in Game 1 of the Padres series. As for the Brewers, they have a much fresher arm throwing from the bump this Saturday, with Freddy Peralta toeing the rubber.

Brewers appear to have the edge against Cubs Game 1 starter

There is a reason for Milwaukee to have added optimism about its chances to tame the Cubs at home in the series opener. As pointed out by Jesse Rogers of ESPN, Rogers will be pitching on short rest.

“Boyd is 1-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 3 games on 3 days rest in his career. He only threw 58 pitches in Game 1 on Tuesday so not exactly a full start,” shared Rogers in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday.

Even when discounting the fact that Boyd will step on the mound with the usual five-day rest for a starter, he still looks like a deer in Milwaukee’s headlights just based on how he’s performed against the Brewers this season.

In two starts in the 2025 MLB regular season versus Milwaukee, Boyd allowed nine earned runs on 12 hits with three home runs and four walks issued through just 10.1 innings of work.
