Craig Breslow Puts Harsh Expectations on Red Sox

The chase for a World Series title is a marathon, but it's one the Boston Red Sox expect to be part of.

Boston used the offseason to strengthen its roster through trades and free agency, positioning itself as a serious contender for at least the AL East Division.

That's the goal Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer and former pitcher Craig Breslow believes they should aim for. Breslow spoke to Boston Globe’s Alex Speier about the bare minimum of the Red Sox’s goal this season:

I think the definition of success has appropriately changed over the last 18 months. We’ve put a team together that we believe is capable of winning the division.

Pressure is mounting on the Red Sox this season, driven by their recent additions of talent and absence from the postseason. They haven’t made a playoff appearance since falling in the ALCS in 2021.

Boston last claimed the AL East title in 2018.

With a 237-249 record over the past three seasons, the Red Sox have not finished above .500.

Confident in their revamped roster, the team feels they have the star hitters and reliable pitching needed to be competitive. Key offseason additions include pitchers Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler and second baseman Alex Bregman.

Opening Day saw a 5-2 victory over the Texas Rangers, thanks to Wilyer Abreu’s two-home run performance.

As they eye a potential division title, the Red Sox are looking to win in multiple ways, especially with the New York Yankees’ star pitcher Gerrit Cole out for the season after Tommy John surgery.
