At the beginning of May, the Chicago Cubs were the hottest team in baseball. They had two 10-game winning streaks within a 20-3 run. Since then, the Cubs are 5-18, and Craig Counsell has no explanation for it.
On Wednesday night, the Cubs dropped their third consecutive game. They’re the first team in history to lose eight consecutive home games after winning the previous 15. After the four-game sweep of the Reds to begin May, the Cubs have not won a single series. They’ve lost seven and tied one.
After securing another series loss, this time to the Athletics, Counsell delivered some familiar words to the media. Via Marquee Sports Network, he said, “We’re not winning a lot of baseball games right now … and we’re not playing well enough to win a lot of baseball games. You have to earn it, and we’re not earning it.”
What Craig Counsell said to the media after yet another Chicago Cubs loss is the same thing that’s been said through the skid. The Cubs are not winning; they’re not playing well enough to win. They’re not hitting well; they’re not scoring enough runs. The pitching is giving up too many home runs.
No one seems to have a fix, and everyone seems content to ride the struggle out to the turn. There is a belief that this is just how baseball goes, and the ebbs and flows continue, even for the good teams.
But are the Cubs a “good” team? Good teams win 10 in a row; bad teams lose 10 in a row. Good teams go on 10-3 stretches; bad teams go on 5-18 stretches.
The pitching injuries sustained are catching up. Even as glimpses of an offensive revival seem present, it’s hard to ask for five or more runs per game. Counsell has his work cut out for him. However, words can only take him so far. Something has to change.
