Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer has made only one appearance so far in the 2025 MLB season, and that was back on March 29 against the Baltimore Orioles. But the 40-year-old pitcher, who is on the 60-day injured list, could be activated soon, as he continues to work his way back from a thumb issue.
On Sunday, Scherzer "threw 50 pitches in a three-inning sim game," according to Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Toronto outfielder Dalton Varsho, who is also on the injured list, hit a home run off Scherzer during the simulated session, but overall, the three-time Cy Young winner seemed impressive enough on the mound.
More from Zwelling: "Scherzer threw all of his pitches and felt good, per Blue Jays manager John Schneider. Next step’s a side session in a few days as if taking a normal rotation turn."
The update on Scherzer is a welcome development for the Blue Jays, who, despite losing to the Minnesota Twins (6-3) on Sunday, have been playing well of late. Toronto has won eight of its last 10 outings and, with a 35-30 record, is just behind the New York Yankees by 4.5 games for the top spot in the American League East standings.
Scherzer could see rehab work first in the minors before getting back on the mound for the Blue Jays, who signed him to a one-year, $15.5 million contract in January.
A two-time World Series champion, Scherzer has missed several games due to health issues, dating back to his time with the Texas Rangers in 2023. Since then, he has been sidelined by injuries to his arm, back and shoulder.
From 2023 to 2024, Scherzer, who will turn 41 on July 27, put up a 15-10 record with a 3.81 ERA, 4.29 FIP and a 109 ERA+ through 36 starts with the New York Mets and the Rangers.
