The Chicago Cubs have been in some interesting rumors over the past few years. Some of those have been with Pete Alonso of the New York Mets.
When Alonso was a free agent, some suggested that the Cubs could be interested in signing him. Some believed the Cubs could've traded for him before his free agency, and Michael Busch showed that he's an above-average player.
Those rumors came back on Wednesday, when Jim Bowden of The Athletic linked them to the slugger. He added that if the team doesn't sign Kyle Tucker, there could be a scenario where they get involved for Alonso.
“Alonso entered Tuesday ranked fourth in MLB with a .965 OPS. He likely will opt out and get the long-term contract he sought last offseason before returning to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal. If he doesn’t stay in New York, Alonso would be a fit with several teams including the Phillies (Bryce Harper would seem willing to move back to the outfield for him), Cubs (they would have to be interested if they lose out on Tucker), Rangers and Mariners (both would benefit from his power bat and leadership, as would the Red Sox, particularly if they keep Rafael Devers at DH),” he wrote.
As Bowden touched on, Alonso seems poised to opt out of his $24 million player option for next season. He's been as good as ever this year, leading Major League Baseball in doubles.
He's also blasted nine home runs and has a 165 OPS+, the highest mark of his career.
Even if Alonso slows down a bit, he could be an excellent fit for the Cubs and should get compensated fairly well.
