The Injured List just keeps getting bigger for the Chicago Cubs. Yesterday, second baseman Nick Madrigal was placed on the IL with lower back tightness.

Madrigal was acquired by the Cubs in 2021 in a trade with the cross-town rival Chicago White Sox. It hasn’t been the hottest start for the second baseman so far (.203/.250/.241), but he has shown flashes of his high contact ability throughout the season including several multi-hit games.

There’s still time for Madrigal to turn his season around, but for now he joins a very long list of Cubs players that are dealing with injuries, with this one just being another thorn in the side for.

Vargas Gets the Call

In other news, the Cubs have selected Triple-A infielder Ildemaro Vargas’ contract and designated right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson for assignment.

In 25 games for the Iowa Cubs, Vargas posted a .279/.321/.413 slash line with one home run and seven RBI.

The Cubs finish off their series with the San Diego Padres Wednesday afternoon and then head to Arizona for a three-game series against the Diamondbacks starting on Friday.
