Dave Roberts Explains Disappointing Josue De Paula Move

Josue De Paula’s first major league stint is over for now, but Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained why the team optioned the rookie to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers activated Shohei Ohtani from the injured list Wednesday, creating a corresponding roster move. De Paula was sent down after an impressive 11-game run with Los Angeles.

Roberts said the decision was part of the Dodgers’ original plan once Ohtani returned. He also noted that sending De Paula down gives the team an opportunity to potentially bring him back for the postseason.

De Paula hit .323/.500/.581 with one home run, three doubles and one triple in 31 at-bats. He also drew 11 walks while striking out five times, giving the Dodgers an impressive glimpse of his offensive approach.

The 21-year-old was promoted from Double-A Tulsa on Sept. 11 and quickly earned regular playing time while Ohtani was sidelined. His performance also kept him in the conversation for a potential postseason roster spot.

The timing of the move is particularly important. De Paula must remain on optional assignment for at least 10 days, making him eligible to return Saturday, Oct. 3, which is the scheduled start of the National League Division Series.

That means De Paula will miss the Dodgers’ remaining regular-season games, but the move does not automatically end his postseason chances. Los Angeles can evaluate him alongside other options for its October roster.

For now, De Paula will return to Oklahoma City and continue playing while the Dodgers prepare for the postseason. His brief audition gave Roberts and the organization plenty to consider before October.
