Diamondbacks Announce Ketel Marte News After Removal From Lineup

The Arizona Diamondbacks are trying to make a return to the MLB playoffs this year. Fortunately, they have three of the most talented position players in their lineup every day in outfielder Corbin Carroll, shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and second baseman Ketel Marte.

However, there was a chance this offseason that the trio would be broken up due to Marte’s name being frequently mentioned in trade rumors and the front office actively shopping him. Instead, they kept Marte, and he will remain with the team for the foreseeable future. It is a smart decision considering the player he is.

Marte is off to a slow start in 2026, but during his tenure in Arizona he has proven to be one of the best hitters in the league as a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner.

The Diamondbacks entered Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles looking to get back on track after dropping the series opener. Marte appeared ready to make his 18th appearance of the year, not missing a matchup so far for the club.

Yet moments before first pitch, the Diamondbacks unexpectedly updated their lineup and removed Marte. He was originally in there hitting leadoff and playing second base, but he was replaced by Ildemaro Vargas, who took over both spots.

Shortly after, the Diamondbacks announced the reason for the change through pregame radio host Steve Zinsmeister. “Ketel Marte was just scratched due to lower back tightness,” Zinsmeister wrote on X.

It is possible Marte sustained the injury or felt his back tightening during pregame work, but he will now miss his first contest of the season.

The Diamondbacks will only hope this is not a long-term setback and does not require a stint on the injured list, as they cannot afford to have him sidelined for any stretch.

For a team trying to stay competitive in the National League West, losing Marte even briefly would be a significant blow.
