PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a setback in their offseason plans.

According to reports from Beisbol Puro on Friday, talks between the Diamondbacks and right-handed pitcher Jose Urquidy fell through, removing a pitcher the team had hoped would factor into its rotation plans. The development slightly alters Arizona’s remaining offseason strategy as it searches for pitching depth.

Urquidy, a 30-year-old native of Mexico, is reportedly expected to pitch for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League to showcase himself to additional major league scouts. The decision suggests Urquidy is seeking a guaranteed major league opportunity rather than a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks.

There had been speculation that Urquidy could open the season in a bullpen role if he signed with the Diamondbacks, particularly with Merrill Kelly’s return and Michael Soroka competing for a rotation spot. Urquidy, however, has made clear through his actions that he isn’t looking to eat innings mid-game.

Urquidy previously found success with the Houston Astros, where he was a key contributor during multiple postseason runs before being sidelined by Tommy John surgery. He returned to the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 2025 but made limited appearances and did not regain his previous form.

His recent performance in the Mexican Winter League has been more encouraging. Urquidy posted a 1.09 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 33 innings, went 3-1 and held opponents to a .183 batting average, numbers that suggest he’s finding success again.

The sudden change highlights the ever-evolving nature of offseason roster construction. What once appeared to be a reliable addition for the Diamondbcks is now an unresolved question, while Urquidy’s championship experience is expected to draw attention from other clubs.

With the deal off the table, the Diamondbacks are left with fewer proven pitching options as the offseason nears its conclusion.
