Dodgers' Gonsolin Not Facing Worst-Case Scenario After Injury

The injury bug strikes again for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This time, it is right-handed starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin, who heads to the 15-day injured list with an elbow issue. It is concerning whenever a pitcher has throwing arm problems, particularly for someone like Gonsolin, who missed all of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

However, it is not all bad news for Gonsolin and the Dodgers.

Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register reported that his recently repaired ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is still intact. Manager Dave Roberts has also not revealed a diagnosis, nor does he know when Gonsolin might return.

Gonsolin had struggled in his return to the mound so far in 2025, going 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA and a 5.96 FIP. He also has 38 strikeouts to 18 walks and nine home runs allowed over 36 innings.

The 31-year-old has been unable to replicate his stellar 2022 campaign, which saw him go 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA and a 3.28 FIP over 130 and 1/3 innings. That lone all-star season feels like an eternity ago, especially given the latest setback.

Los Angeles was already strapped for starting pitching, and Gonsolin’s absence will mean relying on Triple-A spot starters and/or bullpen games. Gonsolin joins Tyler Glasnow (60-day), Blake Snell (60-day), and Roki Sasaki (15-day) as the crucial, injured pitchers.

The bullpen is also without guys like Blake Treinen (60-day), Brusdar Graterol (60-day), and Evan Phillips (60-day), and could find themselves in the market for depth at this summer’s trade deadline.

Until then, Gonsolin’s status will be closely monitored, and hopefully, for the Dodgers, he can avoid a long stint.
