Dodgers Make Pitching Roster Move Before Mets Game
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers lead the NL with an 11-4 record, but their pitching staff has taken some lumps. For example, right-handed starters Emmett Sheehan and Roki Sasaki have a 6.60 ERA and 6.23 ERA through three starts, respectively.

Additionally, closer Edwin Diaz has a 6.00 ERA in six appearances, while right-handed relievers Edgardo Henriquez and Ben Casparius have 5.40 and 9.64 ERAs, respectively. However, the club still ranks eighth in baseball with a 3.63 ERA as of this writing, per MLB.com.

Casparius has especially gone through adversity in his big-league career thus far. The 27-year-old went 7-5 with a 4.64 ERA over 46 outings (three starts) as a rookie last season, and now he's injured.

The Dodgers announced the ailment before Monday's game against the New York Mets, via social media.

"The Dodgers recalled RHP Kyle Hurt and placed RHP Ben Casparius on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation," they announced.

Hurt has been with Los Angeles since it acquired him from the Miami Marlins in 2021. The team also acquired southpaw Alex Vesia in the trade, who now has a 2.85 ERA over 307 career outings (one start).

Meanwhile, Hurt only has four MLB appearances to his name. The California native had Tommy John surgery in 2024 and pitched seven rehab outings in the minors when he returned last year.

Hurt is 12-13 with a 4.43 ERA over 89 career minor-league outings (41 starts). The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder has allowed three runs over 4.2 innings in Triple-A this year.

Hurt joins a bullpen featuring Vesia (0.00 ERA), Diaz, southpaw Tanner Scott (1.35 ERA), southpaw Jack Dreyer (2.84 ERA), and right-hander Blake Treinen (0.00 ERA). All of those players are veterans besides Dreyer, who logged a 2.95 ERA over 67 appearances (five starts) as a rookie last year.

The Dodgers are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday, but they've only lost one series they've played in thus far. That's partially because of an offense that leads baseball with 28 homers and an .864 OPS, per MLB.com.

Monday's game starts at 10:10 p.m. ET at Dodger Stadium. Ace right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (2.50 ERA) will start on the mound for Los Angeles against New York right-hander Nolan McLean (2.70 ERA).

After their three-game series against the Mets, the Dodgers will hit the road to face the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants.
