The Los Angeles Dodgers are loaded, but there isn't a chance that Andrew Friedman won't do whatever it takes to put together a better roster at the deadline.
Friedman, the top executive in Major League Baseball, will have a new face in the Dodgers' clubhouse over the next few months.
The question now only becomes who the Dodgers will trade, and David Schoenfield of ESPN named a surprising candidate in Ben Casparius, a right-hander who has thrown the baseball at a decent level for this Dodgers team over the past few years.
“The other problem: Since players on the 60-day IL don't count against the 40-man roster limit, the Dodgers currently have 47 players on the 40-man roster because of all of their injured pitchers. Some of those guys are out for the year, so the roster crunch won't completely happen until the offseason, but when Clayton Kershaw is activated, for example, the Dodgers will have to clear a roster spot (he just made his first rehab appearance in the minors). If they do improve the bench -- and they should -- that could mean trading someone from the 40-man roster, such as one of the above pitchers, rather than a low-level prospect,” he said.
Casparius might be able to get a decent player in return, as he's been very good in important parts of his big league career.
During the 2024 regular season, he posted a 2.16 ERA.
Casparius had a few rough outings during the 2025 campaign, but his ERA is mostly inflated due to his outing against the Chicago Cubs on April 12, when he allowed six earned runs in just 1.2 innings.
Outside of that, he's been perfect, not allowing an earned run since.
