The Los Angeles Dodgers are in a competitive race for first place in the NL West with the rival San Diego Padres, as the team searches for its 12th division title in 13 seasons.
With the Dodgers on track for another postseason berth, the organization is starting to get healthy at the right time—Enrique Hernández returned earlier this week, and Tommy Edman may not be far behind.
A huge reason for the team’s World Series title run in 2024 was Edman, who was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline and went on to win NLCS MVP.
In 2025, Edman has been banged up, appearing in only 86 games and slightly regressing at the plate. He’s posted a .228 batting average, .281 on-base percentage, .677 OPS, 12 home runs, and 44 RBIs.
Edman has been sidelined since early August with a right ankle sprain—his second IL stint of the season after a similar injury in May. Ahead of Friday’s series opener, Edman took live batting practice for the first time since landing on the IL.
“Tommy Edman is taking live at-bats right now. First time he's done that since landing on the IL,” wrote The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.

The Dodgers have made it clear that Edman will only be activated once he’s fully healthy, given how much of his value comes from his elite defensive versatility. He grades out as one of the league’s best defenders across both the infield and outfield.
The 30-year-old switch hitter signed a five-year, $74 million contract extension with the Dodgers in November 2024—just one month after winning the World Series. The organization clearly sees Edman as a long-term piece and is prioritizing his health as they prepare for another deep postseason run.
