Dodgers Updates: Tyler Glasnow And Blake Snell Rehab Starts

The Los Angeles Dodgers fortified their starting rotation by trading for Tarik Skubal, but in the weeks ahead they also expect to add Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow to the group.

On the same day that Skubal made his Dodgers debut, Snell and Glasnow were pitching in games as well. Snell is on the verge of returning as his final rehab start came Tuesday with Triple-A Oklahoma City, but Glasnow is still several weeks away.

Tyler Glasnow

Glasnow’s rehab assignment began with Single-A Ontario and coincidentally came in the same game that saw San Diego Padres teammates Nick Pivetta and Joe Musgrove on rehab with the Lake Elsinore Storm. Though, Pivetta left his appearance early due to an apparent injury.

Glasnow completed two scoreless innings on just 16 pitches. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter. Glasnow’s day concluded with throwing an extra inning in the bullpen. The outing was his first time pitching in a game since May 6.

“It was good,” Glasnow told the Tower Buzzers. “It’s always nice to come out and start your rehab starts, get off of a mound in a game atmosphere. I felt healthy and strong, and I’m ready to keep going.”

Glasnow has been on the injured list since May 8 because of low back spasms. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 6 amid a slow recovery process that included multiple instances of needing to be shut down upon trying to start a throwing progression.

The 32-year-old got over the hump toward the end of June and proceeded cautiously. He twice pitched to batters at Dodger Stadium before starting a rehab assignment.

Blake Snell

Snell threw 73 pitches over 3.2 innings for the Comets against the Salt Lake Bees (Los Angeles Angels) affiliate. He allowed three runs on five hits, including two homers, and also walked four batters. The goal was 75 pitches and five innings.

The left-hander has now completed four rehab starts with all but one coming at the Triple-A level. Prior to Tuesday, Snell’s last time on the mound came with the Tower Buzzers on July 29.

The expectation is Snell’s next time pitching will come with the Dodgers during their homestand. There was the potential for Snell to skip what amounted to his fourth rehab outing but the team ultimately decided to err on the side of caution.

When Snell was working toward making his season debut in May, his rehab assignment was cut short by one start. He pitched for the Dodgers on May 9 and wound up landing back on the injured list before ultimately having surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow.
