Former Astros Starting Pitcher Heavily Scouted
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

After adding Josh Hader to help with their bullpen losses, the Houston Astros are looking at other pitching options before the new season begins.

General manager Dana Brown hinted at the possibility of adding another starter.

If that's the case, it's likely one of J.P. France or Hunter Brown are moved into the bullpen for this year.

The Astros could also call upon one of their former starters to reunite. According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, Jake Odorizzi is looking to sign a Major League deal and has been scouted by up to 12 organizations.

The one-time All-Star last pitched in 2022 with the Atlanta Braves after Houston traded him for reliever Will Smith.

Odorizzi initially signed a two-year, $23.5 million with the Astros in March 2021. He had a 10-10 record with an ERA of 4.04 in 36 appearances and 35 starts.

He underperformed during his tenure with the team, causing the front office to eventually trade him.

A shoulder injury forced him to undergo microscopic surgery and he missed the entire 2023 season after the Braves dealt him to the Texas Rangers.

Morosi mentioned that the 33-year-old is now throwing without restrictions. He's pitched off the mound in front of the different clubs in attendance.

It will be interesting to see what role he will have in 2024 after missing all of last year.

Odorizzi has been a starter in every game except four throughout his career. Teams searching for cheap starting options could be interested in using him in their rotation, but some contending teams might also view him as a depth option or innings eater type of pitcher as well.

With multiple clubs reportedly scouting him, the former Houston pitcher might find his new home soon.
