Former Cy Young winner launches MLB comeback attempt

A former American League Cy Young winner is launching an MLB comeback attempt two years after his last MLB appearance.

Dallas Keuchel is signing a minor league deal with the Athletics, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The 38-year-old will report to the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas.

Keuchel, 38, is clearly determined to make one last run at re-establishing his MLB career. He won the Cy Young for the Houston Astros in 2015, but has posted consistently poor numbers since the 2021 season. His most recent MLB season was in 2024, when he posted a 5.40 ERA in four starts for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Once upon a time, Keuchel was one of the most difficult pitchers to hit in the majors. He was always more of a command pitcher, and as his command got worse, so did his results. Since the start of the 2021 season, he has posted a 6.24 ERA over 277 innings.

The decision to take a flier on Keuchel also demonstrates how rough the Athletics’ pitching situation is. They have a 5.34 team ERA this season, and only the Colorado Rockies have allowed more runs than they have in 2026.
